What you need to know if you are hunting in Nova Scotia!
/The Basics
You can obtain a hunter’s license at the N.S. Dept. of Natural Resources, or any approved vendor. You need to renew your hunters licence every year. You must be the age of 18 or older unless you have an adult with you. Hunting season in Nova Scotia is open October 1st until December 5. You are not allowed hunting on Sundays except for November two designated Sundays in November. On those Sundays hunters can kill any animal, except moose. You shall not have a loaded gun in your motorized vehicle at any time during open season, if you do, your vehicle and firearms may be seized! Absolutely no carrying of a non-registered firearm at any time.
Where can I hunt?
If you are new to hunting you can contact your DNR office and they will give you a list of the designated areas for hunting, depending on the animal you plan to hunt. When you are choosing your area for hunting, you cannot hunt or do any hunting related activities without the consent of the property owner on:
· Golf course
· Farmlands (Including Christmas trees and berry farms)
· Fenced in property
· Or if there is a Private Property sign
You are not allowed to hunt or discharge your weapons within 804m of a school, or within 182m of a home or most other public places.
Safety
We want hunters to be safe while enjoying their time in the woods. As a regulation set out by DNR, you must always wear hunter orange. You should be wearing at least 50% of hunter orange, specifically your cap and outer clothing above the waist. If you are bringing any hunting dogs on your trip, an orange vest is the best way to make sure other hunters do not mistake your pet as a wild animal. This also goes for non-hunters walking through the woods as well. You do not want to be mistaken for an animal in the woods by another hunter. If you are going to be using tree stands or any other hunting equipment, ensure that you follow the safety precautions and ensure your equipment is in good working order.
Have a happy and safe hunting season!!!
